Maestro & Me Week 5
Maestro & Me Blog Week 5
From Gemma Turvey, Artistic Director
This week was the most rewarding by far, for everyone involved in Maestro & Me Program. In this session, each student began composing their own melody, based on their chosen topic.
It is such a privilege to witness this process as it unfolds. Children are so creative. It is natural that painting with sound comes easily for many of them. I was captivated as one student described to me the thinking behind her melody, which involved playing a pattern ascending steadily up the xylophone:
Her piece is about Stars. She explained that as the piece gets higher that means more stars are coming out. She will stay up high on the instrument for a small period, and then will descend again down the instrument as the stars slowly disappear! This is such a creative way of thinking about stars. Magical!
We will select a number of these pieces to perform with the NPCO at the school’s Music on the Mount concert on Saturday 2nd September, and I a beaming with excitement to help unveil some of the melodies to the wider community.
About Maestro & Me
Maestro & Me is an initiative of Buninyong Primary School and the NPCO, funded by Creative Victoria’s Artist in Schools Program.
Through Terms 2 and 3 students at Buninyong Primary School Years 3-6 will work with NPCO Artistic Director, pianist/composer Gemma Turvey learning how to improvise and create their own, original compositions! The program will culminate in their Music on the Mount concert in September, showcasing many of their compositions performed by the New Palm Court Orchestra for the broader school community!
