Maestro & Me Week 2
Maestro & Me Blog Week 2
From Gemma Turvey, Artistic Director
This week’s task was to paint a picture using music and improvisation.
To begin I played the students two short recorded movements of Prokofiev’s Peter & The Wolf ; the Bird theme and the famously lyrical Swan theme. Their task was to describe what made the music sound like these animals. Equipping them with musical terminology such as tempo, staccato, pitch and intervals, they couldn’t wait to describe to me how Prokofiev had achieved this.
We then took the briefest of excursions to the school fence which backs on to the local Buninyong Botanical Gardens. Here we stood quietly listening and observing the beautiful landscape of trees, Autumn leaves, the pond and birdlife before us.
The magic really started when we returned to the cottage, and the students began to paint with music what they saw and heard. Using a range of percussion at their fingertips, they painted the wind in the tress, bird song, rippling water, sunlight and tiny spiders. It was an inspiration to hear and bear witness to their creative expression, full of intent.
I can’t wait for the next session and to hear what melodies these students will compose.
About Maestro & Me
Maestro & Me is an initiative of Buninyong Primary School and the NPCO, funded by Creative Victoria’s Artist in Schools Program.
Through Terms 2 and 3 students at Buninyong Primary School Years 3-6 will work with NPCO Artistic Director, pianist/composer Gemma Turvey learning how to improvise and create their own, original compositions! The program will culminate in their Music on the Mount concert in September, showcasing many of their compositions performed by the New Palm Court Orchestra for the broader school community!
