Maestro & Me Week 1!
Maestro & Me Blog Week 1
From Gemma Turvey, Artistic Director
On Thursday 27th April I set off up to Buninyong Primary School to begin the first session of our Maestro & Me program!
Week 1 got off to a fantastic start, with many excited young faces and alert ears! We listened to music by Australian composers, and were transported in our mind’s eye to holidays in Italy, a cafe in Paris, walking on musical clouds, and dancing frogs… just to name a few. Wonderful words such as flamboyant, calm and joyful were also used to describe how the music made them feel.
We also experienced having musical conversations with a simple Question and Answer game using only the notes on a xylophone to speak!
Through these simple exercises, the students quickly understood that music can transport us and express emotions without using words.
I am looking forward to Week 2, when the students will paint their own musical pictures using improvisation!
About Maestro & Me
Maestro & Me is an initiative of Buninyong Primary School and the NPCO, funded by Creative Victoria’s Artist in Schools Program.
Through Terms 2 and 3 students at Buninyong Primary School Years 3-6 will work with NPCO Artistic Director, pianist/composer Gemma Turvey learning how to improvise and create their own, original compositions! The program will culminate in their Music on the Mount concert in September, showcasing many of their compositions performed by the New Palm Court Orchestra for the broader school community!
