Maestro & Me Week 1

Maestro & Me Week 1: Sunrise

from Artistic Director Gemma Turvey

It is such a joy to be back at Buninyong Primary to deliver the Maestro & Me Program this year.  I was greeted on Monday morning with so many bright, happy and excited faces, and very attentive ears!

The first session is all about listening to specific pieces of music, discussing where the music takes us in our imagination, and understanding why or how the music does that! We saw elegant dancing, a squirrel slipping as it climbed up a tree, evil dark clouds being pushed away, baby dragons hatching, snow falling, rain drops, Mexican hats and a sunrise, just to name a few!

My favourite moment was introducing the students to the first movements from the Alpine Symphony by Richard Strauss. In the opening of this Symphony, Strauss depicts a sunrise, from still night and darkness to radiant beaming light.  This takes approximately 3 minutes to build and is a glorious example of painting with music. You can listen to it here:  I recommend listening with eyes closed!

It is so special to watch these young students engaging with instrumental music, its poetry and colour. Next week they’ll start painting with music for themselves through improvisation.

Maestro & Me is an initiative of Buninyong Primary School and the NPCO.

Through Term 2 selected students at Buninyong Primary School Years 3-6 will work with NPCO Artistic Director, pianist/composer Gemma Turvey learning how to improvise and create their own, original compositions! The program culminates in their Music on the Mount concert in June, showcasing many of their compositions premiered by the New Palm Court Orchestra for the broader school community!
